Brisbane Open House

Saturday, October 10, 2015

Hello again! It's been a really fruitful day for me today because I get to visit buildings that aren't usually open to public thanks to Brisbane Open House 2015!

"Brisbane Open House is a free event, providing residents and visitors with the rare opportunity to discover the hidden wealth of architecture, engineering and history in buildings and places around Brisbane city.
Held annually in conjunction with World Architecture Day, selected buildings are opened for the public with guided and self-guided tours to encourage them to explore, re-examine and engage with Brisbane's built environment - opening eyes and minds to good design and curious spaces."

I visited the Queensland Performing Arts Centre a.k.a QPAC, 612 ABC Brisbane (the Australian Broadcasting Corporation), and the Brisbane General Post Office (GPO).

This is the only picture I took at the QPAC because I was too immersed with the guided tour and the magnificent architecture and engineering of the 4 theatres! I cannot name you exactly the terms and architecture jargons they used but to make things short, everything is specifically and carefully designed for their own purposes to maximise the sustainability. Even the foams in the audiences' seats were designed specifically for acousticity with or without the audience sitting on them! We were brought backstage to have a look at the loading docks (one of the most efficient systems in the country!) and the mechanics behind each theatre. It's really amazing to learn the behind-the-scenes!

After the QPAC Tour, I went to 612 ABC Brisbane which is just next to the QPAC.

Pic: the production team's office. the black and red numbers are actually their extension lines! haha!

Pic: the cameras are no longer rolling manually but controlled but the producer in the other room. so when the news goes live, there will be the news presenter alone in the set. how cool!

Out of the 90 buildings featured in Brisbane Open House 2015, I only managed to visit 3. But 3 is enough to blow my mind! It's a must-do for me next year then!
