Life in Brisbane

Sunday, July 12, 2015

Hello! I don't know what brings me back to this blog again but I finally have time to do a proper blog post during this winter break! Nevertheless, I do remember somebody telling me to keep a blog to have something to look back in the future.

Just a little update about my new life now: A full time Bachelor of Nursing student at the University of Queensland.

I came to Brisbane on Feb 19th, 2015, on the first day of Lunar New Year. Good thing about not being too sad leaving home, I had my mom travelling with me and I'm staying with my cousin and her family probably until I finish my degree.

As I mentioned earlier, I am on my 1-month semester break now. Semester 1 was definitely a roller-coaster ride for me as I was adjusting to becoming a uni student. Heaps of assessments and written assignments which I was not good in the beginning. It was a little bit hard to adapt to my uni programme because suddenly everything has become so specialized and I need to learn the Australian culture to adapt to my course. I was one of the countable international students in my course and the only Malaysian amongst them! But I am very thankful for my Clinical Lecturer, Ms Elizabeth Kelly (Registered Nurse/Registered Midwife), who guided me along the 12 weeks of Semester 1 and have seen me improving bit by bit from day 1.
(Being in a health science/medical stream does not only include factual sciences e.g. biology, but social sciences which evolve every day as well.)

So what do I do as a nursing student?
I spent 2 days in class (1 day of combined lecture and 1 day of Problem-based Learning (PBL) in a smaller group of 15), and 2 days of Clinical Placement in the hospital, in a week. In short, 2 days of theory, 2 days of practical, in a week. My Clinical School is Mater Health Services, South Brisbane. I was placed under the Department of Haematology/Oncology at the Mater Private Hospital. Mater Health Services were founded by a group of nuns known as the Sisters of Mercy in 1906.

What do I do in my free time?
I cook, I watch dramas and I annoy my little niece, Maybelle Dang. You can get fresh produce easily in Australia and it would be a waste if you do not learn how to cook! Well, besides that, a friend of mine who is studying in the U.K. who inspires me a lot in cooking so that made me want to make good food too.

Kimchi Fried Rice I made recently

Clean eating: Pasta Salad

Pan-grilled Salmon with Sautéed Broccolini and Lemon-Butter-Garlic Sauce
And that's about it!

I promise I will try to update as often as I could with my already hectic schedules when I'm back to uni. Till next time!

And thank you for reading :)
